ਉੱਤਰ : ਸਤੂਪ ਮਹਾਤਮਾ ਬੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਂ ਪਰਿਨਿਰਵਾਣ (ਮੁਕਤੀ) ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਸੀ।
ਇਹ ਇਕ ਬੜਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਅਰਧ ਗੋਲਕਾਰ ਗੁੰਬਦ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ।
ਕਲਾ ਦੇ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀਕੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਸਤੂਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੀ, ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਭਵਨ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਕਲਾ ਦੇ ਉੱਤਮ ਨਮੂਨੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਤੂਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਕਾਸ਼ੀ ਵੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਸੀ।
ਸਾਂਚੀ ਤੇ ਅਮਰਾਵਤੀ ਦੇ ਸਤੂਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੇ ਪੱਥਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੰਧਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਿਕਾਸ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨਮੂਨੇ ਹੁਣ ਵੀ ਦੇਖੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਚਿਤ੍ਰਿਤ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ ਬੁੱਧ ਜੀਵਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਹਨ।
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਧਿਕ ਦਾ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਬੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ, ਮਹਾਨ ਤਿਆਗ, ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਚੱਕਰ ਪਰਿਵਰਤਨ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਵਚਨ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।
ਗੋਲਾਕਾਰ ਚਿੱਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ ਦਰਸਾਏ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਇਹ ਮਹਾਨ ਕਲਾ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਕਲਪਨਾ ਦੇ ਸਬੂਤ ਹਨ।

Beautiful carvings on the stone walls can still be seen from the entrances of the stupas of Sanchi and Amravati.
The scenes depicted on them relate to the life of Buddha.
Most of these relate to the Buddha’s birth, great renunciation, attainment of enlightenment, and discourses before the turning of the Dharma wheel and his salvation.
