THE GIFT

One day, Emperor Akbar was sitting in the court with his courtiers. They were discussing about warriors matters. Just then an old fakir came there.

The fakir bowed before the emperor and gave him some green leaves. Emperor Akbar thought that the fakir was praying for the prosperity of his kingdom. He asked an attendant to give the fakir hundred gold coins.

The fakir thanked the emperor and went away from there. The courtiers couldn’t understand why the emperor gave hundred gold coins to the fakir. Emperor told them the meaning of green leaves.

After some time, a Bengali saint came to the court. He also bowed before the king. He gave some rice and ash to the king. The king misinterpreted it’s meaning.

He thought that the saint wanted his kingdom to scatter just like rice and his throne to convert into ash. Thinking this, the emperor got angry. He asked his soldiers to throw the saint out of the palace.

After some time, Birbal reached there. He met some sardars outside the palace who told him about the fakir and the saint.

He went to the court and said to the emperor, “Your Majesty, you misinterpreted the Bengali saint. In Bengal, rice and ash are treated as prasad of Goddess Kali. Giving you those things, the saint wanted your kingdom to progress leaps and bounds. But, you didn’t understand him and insulted him by throwing him out of the palace.”

Emperor Akbar realised his mistake. He, at once, sent his soldiers in search of the saint. The soldiers found the saint at some distance.

They presented him before the emperor. Emperor Akbar asked for forgiveness from the saint and gave him many gold coins as a reward.

The saint blessed the emperor and went away. Emperor Akbar thanked Birbal and embraced him.
