About Punjab State
The word Punjab is made up of two Persian words- Panj and Aab. Panj means five and Aab means water.
This name was probably given to this land possibly in an era when this region came into close contact with Persia.
The Punjab was known as land of fiver rivers because of the five rivers that ran through Jhelum, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej and Chenab.
In 1947 when India was divided into two parts – Pakistan and India, half of the Punjab became part of Pakistan.
Five rivers were divided between India and Pakistan.
Sutlej, Beas and Ravi is in India ( two rivers Beas and Sutlej flows in Punjab). Punjab is in northwest India and has an area of 50.362 square kilometres (19,445 sq mt). It extends from the latitudes 29.30 North to 32.32°. North and longitudes 73.55 East to 76.50East.
Punjab is bounded on the west by Pakistan, on the north by Jammu and Kashmir, on the northeast by Himachal Pradesh and on the south by Haryana and Rajasthan. It shares its border with Pakistan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
Physically, the state may be divided in to two parts; sub-Shivalik Strip and Sutlej-Ghaggar Plain. The Sub-Shivalik strip covers the upper portion of Ropar, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur district. The Sutlej- Ghaggar plain embraces the other districts of Punjab.
