Q 1. Who is Sekar? Why does he have to sell his paddy at a lower price to traders?

Ans. Sekar is a small farmer. He takes seeds and fertilizer from trader as loan. To pay back the loan he has to sell paddy to traders at lower price than that what he would get in market.

Q 2. What are the crop failures in the village?

Ans. The crop fails due to :

1. Poor quality of seeds

2. Attack of pests

3. Insufficient rain by monsoon.

Q 3. Why do some farmers commit suicide in many parts of India?

Ans. Due to crop failure farmers are unable to pay back their loans. They may even have to borrow money to fulfill their basic needs. Soon the loan becomes so large that they are unable to repay, when the farmers are caught in debt.

Q 4. What do you mean by terrace farming?

Ans. 1. This means that land on a hill slope is made into a flat plot and carved out in steps.

2. The slides of each plot are raised in order to retain water.

3. The crops are cultivated on flat land.

Q 5. Define migration.

Ans. It means movement of people from place to place to find jobs.

Q 6. Name different types of farmers.

Ans. Different types of farmers are :

1. Agricultural labourers : They are landless and work on other fields or small or large farms.

2. Small farmers : They have land between 1 hectare to 5 hectares.

3. Large farmers: They have land more than 5 hectares.
