Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji 🙏

“All are creatures of God and His Creation.” How true !

This is as necessary to remember in today’s world, as it has been at any point during the five and a half centuries since Guru Nanak Dev (1469-1539) .

In India, Bahalol Lodi, Sikandar Lodi, Ibrahim Lodi, Babur and Humayun, all ruled Delhi during His Lifetime.

The Three Pillars of Sikhism were formalised by Guru Nanak Dev Ji as:

Naam Japo: The Guru led the Sikhs directly to practise Simran and Naam Japoโ€”meditation on God and reciting and chanting of God’s Name.

Kirat Karo: He asked the Sikhs to live as householders and practise Kirat Karo: to honestly earn, with hard work, by one’s physical and mental effort, while accepting God’s gifts and blessing.

Vaแน‡แธ Chakkล: The Sikhs were asked to share (the food, Wealth etc.) with everyone, Irrespective of caste, creed, color or sexuality by practising Vanแธ Chakkลโ€”โ€œShare and Consume togetherโ€. This spirit of Giving is an important message from Guru Nanak.

Guru Nanak undertook four journeys called Udasis. During His time, the Guru spoke of equality and showed how people could live together.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji challenged the prevalent notion regarding the position of women in society all the time by asserting that they were worthy of praise and equal to men.

He strongly disapproves of the practice of sutak or impurity, attributed to the women due to their physiological differences.

It was at Gurudwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan, where Guru Ji set out to dissolve the differences through the institution of Sangat and Pangat.

Sangat is a congregation where everyone is welcome. Equality and egalitarianism are tangible as everyone sits together in Pangat for the Langar.

Guru Nanak sang his bani. Guru Granth Sahib has compositions by Guru Nanak Dev Ji : 974 shabads composed in 19 Ragas.

Guru Nanak’s teachings provide us with the necessary spiritual values that guide us through the materialistic morass.

His approach appeals to the fundamental goodness in all human beings. It stresses on His message of universal unity and seeks to dispel the mist of ignorance.
